| Abstract |
In this memo, Dr. Kellerman argues that Schacht's statement (see preceding document 48.05 Schacht's "brief summary"), although indicating the defendant's opposition to Nazism, does not substantially contradict the charges made in the trial brief (see preceding document 48.02 "Trial Brief of Hjalmar Schacht"). Kellerman points out that Schacht, whatever personal misgivings about Hitler or conscientious objections to Nazism he might have conceived, accepted the position of Plenipotentiary for War Economy in 1935 and remained a Reich Minister until 1943. Although he does not dismiss out of hand Schacht's eventual disavowal of Nazism or disregard the risks attendant upon open non-conformity, Kellerman insists that the pertinent question is "whether late remorse can possibly acquit [Schacht] with respect to his earlier commitments." This document is a typewritten original on generally stable paper. Kellerman has initialed it and apparently made five minor handwritten emendations of the typed text. |
