Contents: Established in 1995, the Tax History Project is a public service initiative from Tax Analysts, a nonprofit corporation whose mission is “to help the country tax its citizens fairly, simply, and efficiently.” The Project provides scholars, policymakers, journalists, and the general public with information on the history of U.S. public finance in a breezy and accessible but highly erudite manner. Features of the site include a virtual museum of American tax history (“Tax History Museum”), a document archive of historical material on taxation (“The Price of Civilization”), tax returns filed by various American presidents (“Presidential Tax Returns”), excerpts from the Federalist Papers covering the Constitution's power to tax (“Taxing Federalism”), cartoons, posters, and other tax-related images (“Image Gallery”), and research, analysis, and commentary on tax history and contemporary tax debates (“Readings in Tax History”). Even those who find discussions of income tax dry and boring will be fascinated by this website. |
