Contents: The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) is "an intergovernmental organization that supports sustainable democracy worldwide. Its objective is to strengthen democratic institutions and processes." It provides knowledge, policy proposals and assistance with democratic reform. Two different "axes" of searching are possible within the site, one listing "Areas of Expertise" (such as "Democracy and Conflict" or "Democracy and Gender") and the other "Regions," within which are profiles of ongoing or past work in individual countries. The "Areas of Expertise" offer publications used in the field, available in many languages and for free online or for a nominal cost in hardcopy form. These publications provide such information as comparisons of different voting systems or techniques for increasing the participation of women in politics. The background information presented on individual countries in the "Regions" section is full and thorough, providing a valuable analysis of recent political history in the nations where IDEA has worked; many of the profiles might well serve as a second level of research after first looking over such profiles as are available in the CIA World Factbook or similar sources. A Google search engine provides additional access to the site's contents.
