Contents: The European Civil Liberties Network (ECLN) was founded in 2005 as an initiative of academics, journalists, and activists, and various groups devoted to civil rights and liberties, democracy, and race issues. The Network believes that we are in a time “when civil liberties and democracy are under attack as never before and the need for a collective response to counter these threats has never been greater.” ECLN, in conjunction with other groups, seeks to create a European society that is pluralistic, diverse, and tolerant. The Network has a dozen main issues they are addressing, including immigration and asylum, racism and fascism, surveillance, prisons, and freedom of information. The content of the site is found within two main sections with a blog-like style, the “noticeboard” and the “news feeds.” On the noticeboard, users will find posts highlighting an array of events, reports, websites, and white papers. Recent posts cover a seminar in Rome on worker mobilization and a Dutch report on European Union policies that threaten member countries’ power over economic issues. For topical access to the noticeboard, visitors should go to the “issues” section. The news feeds section offers headlines from civil liberties news services. Users may categorize news feeds according to various organizations, including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the Institute of Race Relations.
