Contents: The Global Security Institute (GSI), founded by Senator Alan Cranston, is an organization “dedicated to strengthening international cooperation and security based on the rule of law, with a particular focus on nuclear arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament.” GSI has four components, each with a GSI group of experts on arms control. The Bipartisan Security Group (BSG) is composed of members of Congress. The Disarmament and Peace Education Program (DPE) is composed of citizens and leaders in the global community. Heads of government, diplomats and other officials from around the world make up the Middle Powers Initiative (MPI) and Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (PNND) is composed of legislators around the world. The website has tabs to each group off its home page. The home page has key news stories from the present dating back to 2004. One must scroll down through the news stories, which makes for a very long page. There is a left column with materials specific to GSI such as documents (relating to GSI but not authored by GSI,) GSI publications (policy briefs and reports,) News Room (including press releases and GSI in the news,) multimedia materials, links, events (again with current events and a list of events dating back to 2003,) and a GSI newsletter containing links to reports, testimonies, photo galleries, op-eds, speeches, and briefing papers. The subscription to the newsletter is free. The home page also has a donations link, a contact link, and a drop down menu of shortcuts around the site. Three of the four initiatives have pages that mirror the home page, with PNND having materials in 10 languages. DPE’s page provides a history of nuclear weapons with a timeline, facts, a glossary, Country Resources listing countries with nuclear weapons and those of interest, quotes, video clips and information on how to take action. The website has a search function, where phrases must be enclosed in quotation marks. GSI has a plethora of nuclear disarmament information and documents in detail its many efforts to achieve that goal. The organization also has a Facebook page. |
